The Daily Telegraph experimented very briefly about a decade ago with the idea of storing clues in a database and only paying setters for the occasional new clue, but this was scotched by the setters, many of who worked for more than one paper so could easily get the other papers (The Guardian in particular) to write "knocking copy" about the idea - justifiably so.xwd_fiendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01290578300623523697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-186196426989121501.post-29838688105413933892010-04-11T17:35:05.774+01:002010-04-11T17:35:05.774+01:00That you got 1A leaves me speechless.

Hallway is passage. The symbol for silver is AG. Remove the silver from the hallway. Pass[ag]e and you are left with passe which means no longer used.

1 A: Melissa. Mass not normal means the letters will be churned up. The priest is Eli which is IN mass. Put together, you get Melissa - which is the female at the start of the clue.

The hard part is working out which bit of the clue is directing you to the actual answer and which bits are there to obfuscate.Moptophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03043271018134053860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-186196426989121501.post-84209960914177968832010-04-11T14:27:47.097+01:002010-04-11T14:27:47.097+01:00Ah Moptop, it's all I can do to keep my self-e...Ah Moptop, it's all I can do to keep my self-esteem above water with this post.

You do cryptic crosswords. Successfully. With pleasure. And you seem to have a genetic gift for them.
This shouldn't have anything to do with my SE, I know, but it does. I can't do them, and here is yet more evidence that there is something wrong with me. I really, really wanted to be able to figure out 36 and 52 down, and if not, to at least find the solution a bit farther down. Even if cleverly imbedded in your text. But no.

Can you at least.....?Deborahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10892637441668897411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-186196426989121501.post-17993897642169912942010-04-11T13:01:27.371+01:002010-04-11T13:01:27.371+01:00I can add Cryptic Crosswords to the long, long lis...I can add Cryptic Crosswords to the long, long list of things I do instead of doing what I really ought to be doing ...Moptophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03043271018134053860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-186196426989121501.post-11849937990137785912010-04-11T12:56:15.373+01:002010-04-11T12:56:15.373+01:00Being one who is far more in tune with the colour ...Being one who is far more in tune with the colour blue than Cryptic Crosswords, your clues have as much meaning to me as Kryptonite ...Jinksyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01686101468214361004noreply@blogger.com
